[Scenario-based design deals with task analysis and should be complemented by human-in-the-loop simulations that enable activity observation and analysis, and therefore activity-based design. A distinction is made between task (i.e., what is prescribed) and activity (i.e., what is effectively done). The making of complex sociotechnical systems is incremental and supported by formative evaluations. HSI has evolved from human factors and ergonomics, as well as human-computer interaction. It currently merges with artificial intelligence, providing more possibilities for human-centered design. This chapter presents the evolution of engineering-oriented human-centered fields of investigation and states innovation as a risk-taking activity. Therefore, HSI results from an appropriate mix of expertise and experience from subject matter experts and creativity as a constant integration process involving technology, organization and people.]
