Design for FlexibilityThe Unavoidable Issue of Tangibility

Abstract

[Virtual Human-Centered Design (Virtual HCD or VHCD) is the design process using digital human-in-the-loop digital simulation. While it is now possible to explore and take into account human factors very early in the life cycle of a system (good news), the approach remains confined to a virtual environment. It is, therefore, essential to consider the tangibility of the system being developed. VHCD tangibilization process should then be considered seriously. More specifically, documenting the design process and its solution becomes essential for accessing such tangibility issues. The Design Card concept enables structuring design rationale capitalization as well as easy experience-based knowledge reuse. We then need a framework that gives us access to past experience and allows us to create solutions that address issues at hand. The evolution from MBSE to SimBSE (Simulation-Based Systems Engineering) with the human in the loop is typically supported by a multi-agent approach. Indeed, we have to consider human agents and machine agents interacting with each other. Evolutionary design versus disruptive design approaches related to the tangibility issue and metrics will be developed in this chapter.]
