Abstract

[Automobile-dependent society may imply huge risks, in particular traffic risks, which have almost become part of everyday life in cities, constituting a great threat to personal safety. The frequency of traffic accidents and their safety implications for cities have made them a new area of study for researchers in modern cities. This article focuses on three types of traffic risks—institutional, technological and personal. Based on an empirical survey, the article mainly discusses the relationship between individuals’ risky behaviors and traffic accidents. And then proceeding from Elias’ theoretical perspective of the “civilizing process”, the article discusses how to avoid individual traffic risk through institutional and technical means as well as personal efforts.]
