[China’s accelerated urbanization has provided tremendous opportunities for the automobile market and caused substantial changes in Chinese society. Urbanization and automobile dependency, like two incredibly powerful engines, work together to promote city development and transform Chinese urban-rural social space in a new manner. This article, proceeding from urbanization and transformation of Chinese automobile market, analyses changes in car consumption policies, from restricting car consumption to encouraging purchase of cars by urban households (promoting car use in cities) and encouraging purchase of cars by rural households (promoting car use in the countryside), in order to examine the relationship between automobile dependency and urbanization and go further to discuss challenges posed by the automobile-dependent society and changes in daily urban life. On this basis, the article explores how the institutional arrangements of urbanization and interest patterns in the automobile-dependent society have prompted a new round of transformation of Chinese urban-rural social space and addresses some of the prominent problems that lie behind this process, like the protection and utilization of land resources.]
