Editor's Note P1: FMN/GEE P2: GCR Journal of Aging and Identity [jai] PH022-297299 December 29, 2000 21:23 Style file version Nov. 19th, 1999 Journal of Aging and Identity, Vol. 6, No. 1, 2001 This issue of the Journal of Aging and Identity features four articles by schol- ars who present diverse aspects of the theme of this journal. Professor Maria Truchan-Tataryn studies literature’s peerless King Lear to challenge ageist pre- conceptions. Professors Peter Oberg and Lars Tornstam consider the body as a symbol of identity in an empirical study that measures physical fitness and youth- fulness as factors in age perception. Professors Azrini Wahidin and Jason Powell study the identities that older offenders adopt in contemporary “special” hospitals in the United Kingdom. Finally, Professor Mira Mayer contemplates the concept of chronic sorrow in Alzheimer’s patients and their caregiving spouses and this sorrow’s effect on their identities. The editors thank these writers for their contributions to this field of study. The range of their subjects and the thoughtfulness of their work enhances our journal and the field of gerontological humanities. Lagretta T.
