We are dedi- cated to bringing you valuable clinical information that you can use in your practice and for patient care. Additionally, we seek out landmark papers that may herald changes in the way we think. In our Summer 2000 issue, Dr. Ron Schachar authored a key article, which explained how presbyopia reversal surgery may also serve to improve clinically document- ed glaucoma. In the current issue, Dr. Schachar returns to explain the “Scleral Expansion Band Pro- cedure for Surgical Reversal of Presbyopia.” The success of this procedure calls into ques- tion the revered theory of Helmholtz. The author feels that this procedure restores accommodation and proposes an entirely new mechanism of accommodation. If the Helmholtz theory of accommodation were correct, then scleral expansion surgery should have no effect on accommodation. But this wonderful paper is not all that is significant in this issue. Dr. Richard Fugo and Dawn DelCampo challenge concepts that have been held since the 1800s. They write about the horopter, Panum space and binocular vision.
