Editorial ASIA EUROPE JOURNAL Springer-Verlag 2003 The shortage of fora for regular scholarly exchanges between Europe and Asia has often been noted. This new journal is intended to contribute towards an alleviation of this unsatisfactory reality. The mandate of the Asia Europe Foundation (ASEF) stipulates as its mission to increase mutual understanding and dialogue between the peoples of Europe and Asia. Hence the launch of this quarterly. It is devoted to publish interdisciplinary and intercultural studies, essays and research on Europe and Asia in the social sciences and humanities. Fields of interest cover bilateral relations in historical and contemporary dimensions, comparative studies, Asian studies in European perspective and European studies from an Asian point of view. The editor welcomes unsolicited articles, book reviews and conference reports in these subject areas. Contributions will be peer reviewed by members of the editorial advisory board. The Asia Europe Journal is wholeheartedly committed to academic freedom. In line with general practice in journal publishing authors retain the responsibility for the contents of their articles. They do not engage the Asia Europe Foundation, its management and governors, the advisory board members, nor ASEF’s constituent member states or the European Commission.
