[Elections and electoral politics have occupied a significant place in the political life of Yemen since the emergence of the new republic at the end of the Cold War. The momentous events of 2011 have seen the inauguration of a new phase in Yemeni politics with the handover of power from long-standing president Ali Abdallah Salih to his former deputy Abd Rabbo Mansour al-Hadi. In the course of the transitional phase upon which the country is now embarked, significant changes to the constitutional and political landscape of the country is envisaged. This chapter focuses on the role of elections and electoral politics in the Republic of Yemen since 1990, the nature of the transitional process that has followed Salih’s exit from political office, and prospects for the success of that process.]
