Epidemiologic Studies in Cancer Prevention and Screening: Cancer Prevention in the United States [The steps undertaken in the United States for cancer prevention are reviewed, especially those relating to smoking, and obesity prevention and healthy nutrition. It is concluded that the knowledge and tools to prevent many cancers and cancer deaths now exist. Cancer prevention interventions, if fully implemented, could potentially prevent several hundred thousand cancer deaths per year. If this is to be achieved, much of the emphasis should be on children as most prevention interventions are most useful when deployed early in life. Consistent application of cancer prevention may not occur without effective interventions at the individual, clinical, community, and policy levels.
