[This chapter discusses the arrival and settlement of 16 of Sierra Leone’s 17 ethnic groups. It covers the customs and traditional practices of the various ethnic groups and their sociopolitical organizations. Many of Sierra Leone’s ethnic groups were influenced by a sixteenth-century marauding force led by a female warrior known as Queen Masarico. The warrior queen’s leadership produced matrilineal clans among a few of Sierra Leone’s ethnic groups. This chapter also discusses the effects of the Samouri Toure and Usman Dan Fodio revolutions on the Mandingo and Fula ethnic groups of Sierra Leone, respectively. It includes a discussion of Sierra Leone’s male and female traditional secret societies.]
