Chapter 5 1. What is the OntologyofJudgement? 1.1 The Link Between Psychology and Language WhatIshall call here the ontology ofjudgment constitutes a linkbetween thetheory ofjudgment as investigated on the level ofdescriptive psychology and thetheory of the linguistic counterparts ofjudgments, i.e.atheory fo- cusing primarily on the functions of speech acts. The ontology ofjudgment investigates the mental act ofjudging andits expression inrelation to their objects. More particularly,the ontology ofjudgment investigates therelation between objects ofjudging acts, on the one hand,and theobjects to which we refer in the speech acts in which the correspondingjudgments are expressed, on the other. In what follows, I shall briefly present three theories of truth (bearers) based on the investigations of the ontology of judgment of Edmund Husserl, Anton Marty and Adolf Reinach. In these theories, a special kind of object called ‘a state of affairs’ is introduced. States of affairs are, on the one hand, objects of mental acts, and, on the other hand, objects of the linguistic expressions of the underlying acts. I think that these theories deserve to be dealt with in a separate chapter not only because they span the divide between descriptive-psychological and speech-act based theories, but also because they present a new
