Histomorphology of the Female Reproductive System in Papilio polytes polytes Linnaeus, 1758 (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae)

Histomorphology of the Female Reproductive System in Papilio polytes polytes Linnaeus, 1758... Observations on the female reproductive system in Papilio polytes polytes L. were carried out in the 5th instar larvae and 3–4 day old virgin female. They were dissected in insect Ringer solution and were fixed in Bouin’s fluid. The tissues were routinely processed and cut at 5–7 μ and doubly stained in haematoxylin and eosin. The ovaries are the only female reproductive organs in fifth instar larva. Larval ovaries are white, elongated, paired structures consisting of four underdeveloped ovarioles containing germ cells, oogonia and follicular epithelium in each ovary. The adult female consists of pair of prominent, large ovaries, lateral oviducts, common oviduct, vagina, spermatheca, bursa copulatrix and accessory glands. Adult ovary consists of four polytrophic ovarioles. Each ovariole is divisible into terminal filament followed by germarium containing perifollicular tissue, oogonia and primary oocytes with trophocytes, extensive vitellarium containing oocytes at different developmental stages. The ovaries and lateral oviducts are mesodermal showing no intima where as remaining female reproductive organs are ectodermal as they are lined by intima. The copulatory pouch, ostium bursae and vaginal opening are located in 8th and 9th abdominal segment respectively. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, India Section B: Biological Sciences Springer Journals
