INTERACTION OF OIL WITH A SEA ICE COVER

INTERACTION OF OIL WITH A SEA ICE COVER Methods of physical and colloid chemistry are applied to consider capillary effects at the oil–ice–atmosphere and oil–ice–water boundaries, as well as to show that the presence of these effects limits the spreading of oil over an ice surface as opposed to a water surface. Formulas for determining the limiting thicknesses of an oil film are derived, which can be used to estimate the spatial scale of oil pollution of a solid ice cover. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Journal of Applied Mechanics and Technical Physics Springer Journals

Abstract

Methods of physical and colloid chemistry are applied to consider capillary effects at the oil–ice–atmosphere and oil–ice–water boundaries, as well as to show that the presence of these effects limits the spreading of oil over an ice surface as opposed to a water surface. Formulas for determining the limiting thicknesses of an oil film are derived, which can be used to estimate the spatial scale of oil pollution of a solid ice cover.
