Introduction: Wrongful Convictions and Exonerations in Asia

Introduction: Wrongful Convictions and Exonerations in Asia Asian Journal of Criminology (2022) 17 (Suppl 1):S1-S7 https://doi.org/10.1007/s11417-022-09385-4 1 2 Hong Lu  · Bin Liang Received: 11 October 2022 / Accepted: 17 October 2022 / Published online: 24 October 2022 © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V. 2022 Wrongful convictions and exonerations have gained growing attention among schol- ars and legal practitioners worldwide in recent decades. With the advance of technology (e.g., DNA), improvement of criminal justice operations, and awareness raised by various organizations, more wrongful conviction cases have come to light globally. For example, the Amnesty International regularly reports cases involving wrongful convictions in vari- ous countries, more recently in Uganda, Spain, Iran, and Egypt. The National Registry of Exonerations (2022) has already recorded 3249 exonerations since 1989 that occurred in the USA, though the real number could be much higher (Gross and O’Brien, B. , 2008; Walsh et  al., 2017). In China, exposure of dozens of wrongful conviction cases signifi - cantly impacted law and legal reforms in recent years (He, 2021). To date, however, very few countries provide national official data on wrongful convictions and exonerations, partly due to a lack of systemic transparency and resources to compile statistics, and partly due to challenges http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Asian Journal of Criminology Springer Journals
