Gifi (1990) includes a content analysis of sixteen such books published before 1978. If anything, the rate of publication of such books since then has increased, as growing computer power has facilitated the ready application of multivariate methods. So is this book different? Is it necessary? Does it provide anything the others do not? The answer to these questions is probably 'yes' - because this book is not about multivariate analysis per se, but about the mathematical techniques. The first edition was published in 1976 and, while the mathematics itself may not have changed, styles of presentation and some of the terminology have. The aim, then, of producing this second edition, was to bring it up to date. In their preface, the authors point out that most multivariate analysis books include brief reviews of the mathematical prerequisites - such as matrix algebra and introductory calculus - but that these are, of necessity, rather rushed.
