During the period 1968-1975, when I was working in multivariate analysis with continuous variables (factor analysis, principal component analysis, canonical variate analysis, regression, MANOVA), I tried to visit Jean-Paul Benzécri, in Paris, 1975. Instead, I met Jean Robert, a disciple of Benzécri. Then I discovered the great possibilities of correspondence analysis (CA), a methodology which could handle frequency and count data. The matters learned in 1975 are, in 2014, updated and well presented in Visualization and Verbalization of Data. This book deals with the main topics of multivariate descriptive analysis, mostly of them under the perspective of the ‘French School’. Therefore, most contributors drink from the sources of the French school of data analysis, founded by Jean- Paul Benzécri. This book, published in memory of Paul Lewi (1938-2012), is divided into two parts. The first (8 chapters) is devoted to the history of correspondence analysis and related methods. The second (10 chapters) explains the contributions of Benzécri and the ‘French School’.
