[Managed realignment projects are increasingly popular in the western developed countries. The underpinning drivers for the implementation of managed realignment are generally similar and revolve around restoration of natural habitats, improved flood and erosion risk management and climate change adaptation. Emerging national and regional strategies will play an important role in the increase of managed realignment approaches being implemented in the next decades. This chapter provides eight examples of strategies adopted by different countries or regions that are likely to influence the dissemination of managed realignment at present and in the future. Examples are drawn from the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, France and the USA. The strategies are discussed in terms of their primary objectives, scope and the preferred mechanisms of implementation.]
