Marie-Francine Moens, Automatic Indexing and Abstracting of Document Texts, The Kluwer International Series on Information Retrieval Vol. 6

Marie-Francine Moens, Automatic Indexing and Abstracting of Document Texts, The Kluwer... 344 BOOK REVIEW The book Automatic Indexing and Abstracting of Document Texts by Marie- Francine Moens provides an overview and a study of AI techniques for automated text processing for the purpose of information retrieval. The book is a slightly shortened version of her doctoral dissertation, which she defended successfully on June 28th, 1999 at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. Her promotor was Prof. Dr. Jos Dumortier. For AI & Law researchers the book is relevant since the AI techniques it deals with are directly applicable to legal domains and because the applications discussed are demonstrated for a database of Belgian legal cases. In her treatment of automatic text processing techniques Moens zooms in on two text processing functions that are prominent in automated information retrieval, namely, indexing and abstracting. In information retrieval systems the indexing function derives a set of single words and phrases from the stored documents to draw up a formal representation characterizing the information contents of the documents. The abstracting function also processes text documents and it produces a short description of the original texts. These condensed formal representations of the documents’ contents can be utilized by an information retrieval system and its users in http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Artificial Intelligence and Law Springer Journals
