In the last decade numerous biodegradable polymers have been approved and introduced in orthopaedics. They provide comparable strength to metal implants but they don’t need removal. The absorption process is slow and induces a nonsymptomatic but histopathologically recognizable tissue response. These biomaterials have a wide range of potential uses in paediatric orthopaedics and traumatology but the implant cost is higher than metallic devices. We describe our experience with bioabsorbable materials in paediatric orthopaedics and traumatology.
