While the existing literature on the topic tends to focus on Western anti-apartheid movements, this chapter focuses on anti-apartheid activism in Japan. In particular, the author highlights the role of overseas travels that brought about occasional yet direct communications between Japanese activists and leaders of liberation movements as well as anti-apartheid activists from Europe, North America and Asia-Oceania. Such face-to-face contacts often had decisive impacts on Japanese activists’ thoughts and gave them long-lasting motivation to commit to anti-apartheid activism.]
