[Multithreaded execution poses several challenges for measuring, simulating, and reporting performance, particularly when running a multiprogrammed workload in a simulated environment—e.g., one which measures instruction throughput over an interval rather than full runtimes. These issues are not isolated to hardware mulithreaded architectures, but are shared by any multiprocessor. However, most multiprocessor research, particularly before multicores, ran or simulated parallel benchmarks—with parallel benchmarks these issues are less of an issue, if at all.
