[Dementia is an umbrella term for several specific conditions that feature progressive cognitive impairment. Dementia is highly prevalent; dental teams in general practice and specialist settings are likely to encounter an increasing number of people living with dementia and may need to adjust how they communicate with and care for their patients to support them appropriately. People living with dementia can be affected in a range of ways but the progressive nature of dementia means any person with dementia will typically need a greater degree of support over time, including with looking after their mouth, with dental care and when making decisions about dental care. This chapter summarises these challenges and provides some practical suggestions and information to support the care of people living with dementia.]
