[Oral medicine in the UK is concerned with the oral health care of patients with chronic, recurrent and medically related disorders of the mouth and with their diagnosis and non-surgical management. Many of these disorders are more prevalent in the older population and will be encountered by dental professionals on a regular basis. Many of these conditions lead to impaired quality of life due to chronic pain and difficulty eating. Dental professionals have a responsibility to recognise oral mucosal abnormalities and make an appropriate referral where clinically indicated to ensure prompt treatment. The importance of early detection and appropriate management of oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) cannot be overestimated and dental professionals have an important role in the drive for early detection and prevention of oral cancer.]
