Oral Health and Dental Care in the Ageing Population Understanding Older People’s Experiences of Oral Health Care

Oral Health and Dental Care in the Ageing Population : Understanding Older People’s Experiences... [It is unrealistic to assume that dental professionals can understand every patient and their views of about dental care as the views and expectations of patients who engage with healthcare services vary drastically. These views of and attitudes towards dental care reflect social and cultural variation and the accumulation of experiences, good and bad, across people’s lives. Older people the potential to have been impacted by healthcare experiences for a longer time than younger people so may have especially varied views and attitudes regarding dental care. Many people are severely anxious about dental care yet others may be highly proactive in seeking quality dental care due to concern about the impact of dental diseases. Understanding people’s views and experiences can ensure that each person is supported at an individual level but can also support the design, delivery, and commissioning of dental services. This chapter details the concepts of person-centredness and the value in understanding each individual who may seek dental care or those who may choose not to do so. Stories are presented directly from patients or their family members to articulate how widely people’s views and experiences can vary and to show the value of listening to individuals within clinical settings and beyond such visits. Finally, we present a summary of how such views can be formally recorded and used in service improvement and oral health research.] http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png

Abstract

Finally, we present a summary of how such views can be formally recorded and used in service improvement and oral health research.]
