[Of the young women patrons of the premises, a large percentage are store employees, telephone girls, stenographers, etc. Their morals are loose and there is no question that they are on terms of sexual intimacy with their male companions. Another class of young women is plainly discernible about these premises. Though probably working girls, that are what may be characterized as ‘near whores’ or ‘whores in the making’. They are more sporty in appearance than the girls mentioned…. Their favorite portion of the premises is the ladies toilet which is by far the busiest place in the room. There they smoke cigarettes and converse for long periods of time… A few ‘kept women’ and professional prostitutes patronize these premises, but the latter do not ply their trade in this rear room. It is their custom to ‘pick up’ a man on the street, then come into the rear room for a few drinks before going to their designated or chosen place for performing the act of sexual cohabitation. These ‘kept women’ and professional prostitutes also… patronize the ladies toilet and from their example and conversation the ‘near whores’… gain further impetus in their downward spiral.1]
