[In this chapter, there is a summary presentation of the historical background for both countries, beginning with the transition from agro-export economies, and culminating in the process of import substitution industrialization (ISI). A description of the agro-export period is presented, followed by the period of transition through WWI and the Great Depression. The different phases of industrialization are considered; from the first phase of light consumer goods, then consumer durables and eventually the third phase of capital goods. In the case of Brazil, the periods of Vargas and Kubitschek are presented, followed by the third phase of industrialization with Geisel, under the military dictatorship. In the case of Argentina, the particular role of Perón and unions, for industrialization is assessed, followed by the subsequent phases of Argentine industrialization, with the government of Frondizi, among others are considered.]
