Persian Paradises at Peril: Azerbaijan, Khoy and Salamas [Because of its strategic geopolitical location Historic Landscapehistoric territorial landscape (HTL), the land of AzerbaijanAzerbaijan North West Iran has been the scene for several military conquests throughout its long history, notably between the Urartu, Median and the Achaemenid civilisations, Sassanid and Byzantine empires, Ottomans and Safavid kingdoms, Russian Tsars and Qajarid Kings, as well as USSR proxies and the US-backed Iranian government. Today, this vast historic territory is divided between several countries such as Armenia, AzerbaijanAzerbaijan, Turkey and Iran. The southeast part below the Araxes River encompasses several Iranian provinces. This chapter examines the notion of a territorial landscape vision of the West AzerbaijanAzerbaijan region that is linked with the historical, geographical, architectural and folkloric layers in both tangible and intangible aspects from the Urartu period to Qajar.
