[QanatsZarch Qanat have played a vital role in underground water extraction since ancient times based on community participatory water management schemes in Iran. Due to recent urban sprawl and development pressures, Qanats are progressively abandoned and degraded. To be sustainable, rehabilitationRehabilitation of Qanats needs to consider social aspects and community involvement in Qanat management system in addition to physical restoration and maintenance. This research aims to analyse recent practices which mainly focuses on the participatory conservationParticipatory Conservation and the role of community awareness and involvement on Qanat revitalization in Iran. The methodology is based on the practical practices and qualitative approach associated with in-depth surveys to both study and implement concrete actions in World Heritage sites of Persian QanatPersian Qanat, taking note of the existing research, World Heritage inscription documents, the oral history as well as re-reading indigenous knowledge.
