Abstract

[In this opening chapter an attempt is made to provide a bird’s eye view of the emergence of Nigeria as a political and economic entity. To start with it is instructive to point out that the territories which later emerged as Nigeria were carved out and ceded to Britain at the Berlin conference of 1885 which partitioned Africa amongst the major European powers of that time. However, the administration of territories now known as Nigeria formally came under the direct supervision of the British Government in 1900 following the revocation of the charter earlier granted to the Royal Niger Company which had hitherto administered parts of the territories making up Nigeria. The country, containing over 250 language groups, emerged as a single political entity in 1914 following the amalgamation of the then Southern and Northern Protectorates.]
