Where we come from, what we bring along Bogusław M. Majewski Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to Singapore The successful ASEM meeting in Hanoi, was - by all measures - an important step in European Union’s foreign policy. It has strengthened our common position in international relations. In case of Poland it also made us even more aware of the potential benefits, as well as the responsibility, inherent in the role that history has prescribed for us. For decades, Poland was an object of the international politics. Decisions were made for us, without our concurrence. With the historic changes initiated by Poland in the 1980es, which changed the world effectively ending the Cold War, we re-emerged as an independent state and became a subject of international relations. One that not only wants to be heard, but – above all – has something to say. Amongst many factors that have contributed to this state of affairs two were of special significance: the debate on the future EU constitution and our policy towards Iraq.
