[While we strive for timeless generalizations that omit specific spatial references, world politics is difficult to interpret in the absence of space and time markers. In particular, the variable concentration of political–economic and military resources is critical to this interpretation. Yet concentration underlines the disproportionate significance of system leaders and lead economies. Over the past 1000 years, global (not regional) power concentration has been strongly influenced by singular centers for technological innovation and linked energy applications. High global power concentrations lead to different kinds of world political behavior than do low global power concentrations. This tendency has also been an emergent phenomenon so that each era of global power concentration is not exactly identical to the ones that preceded or followed it. Thus, space and time matter in deciphering world politics.]
