The contents of the papers focus on various issues in big data, the hottest research topic in academia and industry nowadays. Authors discussed big data from three aspects: philosophy, methodology, and practice. The first paper, “Some Comments on Big data and Data Science”, by Jifa Gu and Lingling Zhang, is invited to this special issue. Prof. Jifa Gu is a world-renowned researcher in Meta-synthesis system approach and Knowledge Science. Currently, he is active in conducting research in data science. This paper discussed the relationship between data, DIKW, big data and data science. From their point of view, they not only emphasize the utilization of data evolving to knowledge and wisdom, but also wish to point out that too much emphasizing “big” may not solve all the problems sometimes.
