(Proceedings of the 20-th Annual Conference of the Gesellschaft flir Klassifikation e. V., University of Freiburg, March 6-8, 1996.) This is the latest in the series of increasingly influential proceedings volumes issued by the German Classification Society. It contains 71 papers (all in English) from their 20-th annual meeting held in March 1996. The 71 papers are arranged in 8 sections (Data analysis and classification, Neural networks and pattern recognition, Statistical models and methods, Information systems, Text analysis and information retrieval, and Applications in medicine, economics/social science, and other areas, respec­ tively). The editors have provided a useful ten-paged preface reviewing and summarizing the contributions of the individual papers. When I reviewed the proceedings of the 1993 Gesellschaft meeting, I criticized some of the English, so it is only fair to report that I found only minor lapses in this volume, and none that interfered with understanding. The volume is well laid-out typographically, and the graphics are well reproduced.
