Reading, spelling, handwriting: Traub systematic holistic method Reading, Spelling, Handwriting: Traub Systematic Holistic Method Nina Traub, P.D. Ossining Union Free School District Ossining, New York Origin and Development The Traub Systematic Holistic method had its origin in 1948 when the author was advised by Dr. Alexander T. Martin, a pediatrician, and Dr. Paul Dozier, a neuropsychiatrist, to undertake one-to-one tu- toring, following the Gillingham manual, to teach a fourth-grade boy with whom her previous efforts as a certified teacher had proved ineffective. The recommended approach was so successful that the author developed an active tutorial program within the community and continued to develop refinements of the method. Beginning in 1957, the one-to-one approach was introduced into the Ossining community, where previously most of the remedial work had been done in groups. Interested parents were trained by the author to tutor learning-disabled children on a one-to-one basis using her method. As the number of trained persons increased, an informal program was developed in the schools. Because of the evident success of this approach, in 1972 Dr. Robert LaFrankie, Superintendent of Schools in Ossining, obtained a small sum of money and arranged to place the program officially in the five elementary schools.
