It consists of ten chapters, including the introduction. The first part (chapters  2–5) studies the key players and developments of judicial reform, setting the institutional context for the chapters on the criminal procedural themes. The second part (chapters  6–8) investigates three contentious themes of criminal procedure reform: pre-trial custody review, live witness testimony and criminal reconciliation, which aim to address several chronic problems with China’s criminal justice. The final part (chap - ters 9–10) examines two contextual themes of criminal justice: performance evaluation and the media’s influence over how judges and prosecutors deal with criminal cases. The first question that arises is: why 2013? Two perspectives explain why 2013 is an important year and thus the significance of this collection.
