Although the focus in this book is on the rise and decline of the “Gowned Brothers” (“袍哥” or Paoge in Chinese pinyin)-a secret society that had long operated throughout Sichuan province-the author investigates more about the intricate relationship between Paoge and individual rural lives that spanned across the Republican, Nationalist, and Communist periods. These periods have posed significant challenges for academic research within China, as a result of the multifaceted political changes happening alongside the relocations of universities to rural areas, the tension between differing Chinese ideologies, and the ongoing resistance wars against Japanese occupation in the country.
