[In this chapter, we briefly review some mathematical concepts as preliminaries for our discussion of Riemannian optimization; these concepts range from linear algebra to general topology and include Euclidean optimization. Although readers are expected to have basic knowledge of linear algebra and calculus, we review some aspects of these topics in consideration of their relationship to manifolds. One of our goals is to establish a foundation for discussion of Riemannian optimization; therefore, throughout this chapter, we note important information where appropriate.]
