[In this chapter we present the reference dynamical model [1] for the poloidal magnetic flux profile and its gradient (equivalent to the effective poloidal field magnitude, as defined in [2]), used throughout the following chapters, as well as the control problem formulation. Some of the main difficulties encountered when dealing with this problem are also highlighted.]
