[This chapter highlights common methodological and statistical errors which are encountered in articles submitted to Emergency Surgery journals. The two fatal errors are: (1) using invalid tools to measure the outcome variables and (2) testing the wrong population. These errors are fatal meaning that research projects cannot be saved retrospectively. Other common mistakes include: (3) using a poorly formulated unclear research question; (4) lack of planning and clear protocols to follow; (5) ignoring addressing missing data; (6) concentrating on the statistical results and its significance while ignoring its clinical significance, and (7) not understanding the difference between correlation and prediction, and finally (8) inadequate/incomplete reporting of the data.]
