Abstract

[In this chapter, I ask: What are the institutional and administrative dynamics that drive voter registration and can narrow existing registration gaps? I argue that aside from the adoption of voter registration reforms, access to voter registration varies depending on when and how Americans can register to vote. The interaction between method of registration and the registration cutoff dates is overlooked in the literature, yet it has important implications for access to the electoral process, as Americans have more exposure to, or utilize, some methods more than others. Available data sources do not allow for a systematic assessment of this interaction, which limits our capacity to understand in-depth the process of voter registration.]
