[This chapter discusses the production history, audience response, and broader cultural context of Lewis Milestone’s film All Quiet on the Western Front (1930). This movie, which won the Academy Award for Best Production, was both a major financial success and cultural moment in the remembrance of the Great War. I discuss the movie as an example of what I term “The Black VoidBlack Void”, a nihilistic view of the conflict that became the dominant framework of the war in cinema afterwards.
