[Oral examinations at appropriate intervals are of value in maintaining oral health, yet there is little evidence to support a specific interval or to quantify the benefit. In many developed countries, there are now very many children and adults with little or no dental disease for whom frequent or 6-month attendance is unnecessary. The importance of early detection of growth abnormalities, caries, periodontal disease and erosion and appropriate treatment makes dental attendance advisable at intervals determined on an individual risk assessment basis, as do other disorders that are unrelated to the presence of natural teeth, for example, oral cancer.]
