[Giving voice to diversity is to introduce a competition of ideas and perspectives. Unmanaged, opposing viewpoints are disruptive. Consequently, conflict management is central to a successful D&I strategy. The D&I objective is a culture of collaboration, sharing, creativity and innovation in the pursuit of common goals. A culture of trust is essential to the free expression of alternative perspectives and experiences by exciting the senses of some while calming the nerves of others. Hence, the D&I message must be carefully crafted to encourage immersive behaviours, dialogue and collegiality, empathy and curiosity. Alternative viewpoints should not be experienced as a challenge to ego, but rather an opportunity to be “better together”. If common purpose and values are embedded in all aspects of corporate activity, these become strategic success criteria for the firm, rightfully determined at the top of the organisation. However, it is not sufficient to shout such ambitions from the rooftops; the message must also be heard in the basement. The communication of the D&I message as part of a carefully planned campaign is essential if it is to reach all stakeholders unimpeded.]
