Abstract

[In this chapter, we emphasise that urban informality has not only created employment opportunities for the rising urban population but also contributed to the growth of the city of Johannesburg’s economy and also significantly contributed to the livelihoods of many people, especially the unemployed and urban poor. There is also an attempt to provide some insights into the sectoral dimensions of informal livelihoods and economic activities. For example, the question of whether informal workers are engaged only in specific job sectors is tackled. In addition, the demographic skew in terms of the involvement of women for example in urban informality is also discussed. As a result, the question of whether or not there are economic activities in which women are the main sectors is addressed. Similarly, the temporality of the economic activities in this UEI and evidence of the formal/informal interfaces of the economic activities in question are discussed.]
