Abstract

[This chapter demonstrates how newspapers in Manchester and Leeds portrayed Churchill, focusing on his domestic policies, and how that portrayal reflected Lancashire and Yorkshire identities. Newspapers in Manchester and Leeds exhibited diverse opinions about Churchill’s attitude towards post-war reconstruction, and an analysis of those opinions shows the weakness of Churchill, the coalition government, and the Conservative Party. This chapter also shows that the Manchester and Leeds newspapers did not express distinctive regional identities when reporting on Churchill. The absence of territorially distinct Churchill coverage may be because, unlike in other parts of the UK, their identities had not been challenged by Churchill and his family in the past.]
