[Activities that have become metaphors or marginal activities in Europe are found to be present and central in a more literal sense in early Australia: this includes their representation in Australian writing. In the readings that follow I examine the literal use of the “field,” more commonly termed “paddock” in Australia, before turning to the conceptual metaphor of the field that has become an influential model in contemporary poetics due to Olson’s theories of the “open field” and “projective verse.”]
