Hence this well- edited volume, consisting of a series of conference contributions of European so- ciologists meeting in Prague in October 2003, addresses an urgent issue, namely the societal consequences of transformation and EU accession in the new and future eastern member states of the European Union. About half of the 15 chapters are purely theoretical, often criticizing past in- tellectual and research work as insufficient and not up to the theoretical rigors at the highest level of abstraction.
