A Cultural History of Chemistry

A Cultural History of Chemistry ambix, 2023, 1–3 A Cultural History of Chemistry. Series editors PETER J. T. MORRIS AND ALAN ROCKE. Pp. 1728 (six volumes), illus., index. Bloomsbury: London. 2022. £395.00 (set of 6 hardback volumes). ISBN: 978-1-4742-9492-8 This Cultural History of Chemistry in six parts, published by Bloomsbury, is the first multi-volume treatment since Partington’s History of Chemistry more than half a century ago. While Partington laid these foundations largely by himself, the Bloomsbury series speaks to the growth of our field and scholarly community: it brings together dozens of editors and authors with a wide range of methodologies and interests, including many SHAC members old and new. It seemed apt to mark this milestone publication with an equally collaborative book review project. Indi- vidual volumes were sent out to different readers, and their book reviews are col- lected here in a collaborative essay review of sorts, with this short introduction to the series and some of the reviews’ main themes. The series is a recent addition to Bloomsbury’s lineup of more than forty cultural histories, on a wide range of topics including memory, law, sexuality, and medicine, each in six volumes. Bloomsbury has created a parallel structure for all of these http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Ambix Taylor & Francis
