A Cultural History of Chemistry in the Eighteenth Century (vol. 4)

A Cultural History of Chemistry in the Eighteenth Century (vol. 4) ambix, 2023, 1–2 A Cultural History of Chemistry in the Eighteenth Century (vol. 4). Edited by MATTHEW DANIEL EDDY AND URSULA KLEIN. Pp. 238, illus. index. Bloomsbury: London, 2022. £395.00 (6-volume set). ISBN: 978-1-4742-9465-2. Although the Bloomsbury website specifies that this volume covers the long eigh- teenth century, there seems to have been little appetite amongst the authors to venture far beyond the death of Lavoisier in 1794. The so-called chemical revolu- tion, as one might expect, looms large throughout the volume, although the authors generally take a nuanced view of the degree to which Lavoisier truly repre- sents the paradigm shift so dear to philosophers of science. The introduction offers a lightning tour of the most important “core concepts” and the “cultural context” of chemistry over the period. Most of the concepts introduced here are expanded upon in the following chapters, but the introduction reminds us of the richness of the soil to be tilled in this volume as well as highlighting some of the questions that still motivate historians of chemistry to grapple with this period. In the chapter on “Theory and Concepts,” Ursula Klein skilfully walks the reader through some of the competing and succeeding theories http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Ambix Taylor & Francis
