This modestly sized collection contains a wealth of information for both specialists and general readers in the history of medieval alchemy. Building on the renaissance in the historiography of alchemy that has taken place over the last generation, the editors have assembled an impressive collection of authors who cover a multitude of topics relating to the aurific art. There are several laudable features that distin- guish this volume from previous surveys of the field. First, the two editors, Charles Burnett and Sébastien Moureau, are keen students both of the history of science in medieval Europe and also of its development in the Islamicate world. This puts them in a strong position not only to delineate the field of alchemy as it existed re- spectively in the two civilisations, but also to provide a new perspective on the cul- tural synthesis that characterised the alchemy of late twelfth- and thirteenth-century Europe.
